Mighty and Faithful (Psalm 89:8)
“O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?”
– Psalm 89:8
Who is as mighty as God? Recently, I had the opportunity to preach on Colossians 1:15-20. Verses 16-18 specifically state how powerful Jesus Christ is. He is the Creator and as such, He made everything in the universe, both the things that we can see as well as the things that we can’t see. When Jesus created the universe and everything in it, He just spoke and it happened. His Word was all He needed to make it happen. He also created everything perfectly balanced so that we can live here on earth. There are over 140 designed for human life and if any one of those was changed, it would be catastrophic!
Jesus also uses just His Word to keep everything together (Hebrews 1:3a “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”) Do you know how much power is in the world? If the atoms in 2 pounds of uranium were to separate at one time, the power produced would be equivalent to roughly 15,000 tons of TNT! Now, imagine the power that is in this world and what would happen if all of the atoms suddenly fell apart. What would that explosion look like? Now think – God is so powerful that He keeps all of that together and not just that, but the atoms in the entire universe! Now that’s powerful!
Does your world ever seem like it is falling apart? I think all of us can relate to that at some point in our lives, whether it be because of the death of a loved one, or separation of family member, or even the loss of a job. During those times it is especially important to remember that Jesus holds everything together even when it seems like everything is falling apart from our perspective. I remember as a child being amazed that Jesus could walk on water, make 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish into enough food to food more than 5,000 people, and calming a storm by just talking to it. Now that I realize that He not only created everything, but that He controls everything with just His word, those tasks don’t seem that difficult to me. If Jesus holds everything together, then walking on water was no more difficult for Him than walking on dry ground. It makes no difference to Him.
When we admit and realize how much power God has, it’s no longer difficult to understand that He can do anything. There is nothing that is too big nor too difficult for Him. He will never let us down because He is faithful. There may be times in our lives when it seems like God has left us and doesn’t care about the pain and suffering that we are experiencing. King David felt like that quite a bit and it is evidenced by some of the Psalms that he wrote. Looking at David’s life from our perspective, we can see how God was faithful to David throughout his entire life, and we serve the same God. Just like God was faithful to David, so He will be faithful to us.
