Where is your trust (psalm 20)
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:7[/perfectpullquote]My wife and I are both in the ministry and I remember that in the beginning of our marriage, specifically before an important ministry season, our lives would seemingly come undone. Our hot water heater would quit working, our keys would disappear, the computer would start having issues, or we would even begin arguing over the silliest things. We would feel discouraged or angry. We would pray together to the Lord, then we would serve and be amazed by what would happen. Children would pray to receive Christ as their Savior and lives would be changed!
Afterwards, we were so excited and glad that we did not give up. It didn’t take us long to realize that these were spiritual attacks and that Satan was trying to distract us from doing what the Lord wanted us to do and accomplish great things for Him. Now, when these situations come up, we are excited because we know that we are about to see God do something mighty! We stop what we’re doing and pray, asking God for help. This is exactly what Psalm 20 is about.
While we may not know exactly where or on what occasion this psalm was written, we do know that it was written before King David was going into battle. The situation may have been bleak. David may have been nervous, facing a new challenge. What we do know is that he went to the right Source for help.
The first five verses are sung by people who are encouraging David that God will answer his prayers and help him in his time of need. In verse 6, David confirms his faith in the Lord. He knows that God is all powerful and has the strength to protect him no matter what the situation. The rest of this psalm is sung by the people and verse 7 could be considered as their battle cry: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” This psalm challenges us to think about who or what we put our trust in.
David and his followers knew exactly who they could rely on. They put their faith in the Lord and not in their military strength. This psalm is a reminder to all of us to not search for our security in the things this world has to offer: money, power, fame, etc. Without the Lord on our side, the battle will be lost. When we try to rely on our own strength, the battle is lost. When we don’t give God the glory that He deserves, the battle is lost.
What would you have done if you were in David’s position? Imagine getting prepared for a battle, what or who would you trust? What do you do when you are faced with a difficult situation? When you’re feeling overwhelmed? When you’re surrounded by discouragement? Do you rely on your wealth, family, or job? Unfortunately, these things will fail you from time to time, but one thing is true – God never fails. Like David, we should never undertake an activity without first going to Him in prayer.
