My Refuge and My Fortress (Psalm 91)
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”Psalm 91:2[/perfectpullquote]
One summer afternoon, many years ago, my family and I were taking a walk on a beautiful day. We were maybe a mile away when clouds started rolling in. It started to sprinkle and we turned around to head for home. As we were walking, the rain kept increasing. Some friends happen to see us walking in the rain and were kind enough to give my wife and child a ride home. There wasn’t room for me so I kept walking and the rain kept coming. Wishing I had an umbrella in hand, I was completely drenched by the time I reached home. While this is a comical memory, it also reminds me of how much I wanted shelter in that moment. I wanted so much to be protected, warm, and dry instead of cold and wet.
Psalm 91 is about how the Lord God Almighty is our refuge and fortress. This Psalm also goes on to prophesy about the future Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. Even Satan recognized this because he even quoted verses 11-12, when he tempted Jesus to throw Himself off of the temple (Matt. 4:5-6). Satan knew this psalm was about Jesus, he thought he could trick Him in testing God, but Jesus didn’t fall for that trick.
Why did Jesus succeed? He succeeded because He made the Lord His dwelling place. I do wonder what Jesus thought while growing up and reading this psalm as a child. At what stage in His life did He realize that this psalm was about Him? What comfort would this psalm give Him knowing that His heavenly Father was protecting Him?
Does this Psalm comfort you when you read it? If you put your trust in God, then these words should comfort you. When you put your trust in God, He is like a mother bird who covers you with her wings. As I read this in verse 4, I was reminded of a story I heard when I was a child about a mother hen and her chicks. There was a fire one day and all of the baby chicks hid under the safety of their mother’s wings. After the fire was put out, the mother was found dead, but all of her babies were safe. While I don’t know if this was a true story or not, it does describe a perfect picture of how God is willing to protect us.
So, when you go about your daily life or when you face a difficult situation, where do you find yourself going for comfort? Do you go to our friends, parents, or other family members? Maybe you find comfort in your job or bank account? Maybe you find comfort in social media sites and how many followers, shares, or likes you have? It’s easy sometimes to put our trust in the things of this world even when we know that they will fail us. If you put your trust in God, then no matter what comes your way, you will be all right. He can get you through any difficult situation. We only need to trust in Him.
