Bless the Lord, O my Soul . . . (Psalm 103)
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Psalm 103:1[/perfectpullquote]When one of the J-Teams for Teams For Medical Missions was checking into the airport at Montego Bay, Jamaica after a week of ministry part of the group was told that their flight was cancelled and they would be diverted to another airport on a later flight. This caused quite a bit of confusion. You could feel the tension begin to build. Just then one of the team members began to sing a song known by Jamaicans all over the island, “ I am blessed, I am blessed, Every day of my life I am blessed. When I wake up in the morning till I lay my head to rest, I am blessed, I am blessed” In a moment, the whole atmosphere of the group was changed. Both team members and ticket agents began to
sing. By the time all was said and done all the team members made it to their final destinations without further incident.
Did you ever stop and think of how blessed we are? Yes, we are blessed with material possessions such as our homes, family, food and clothing, but if that were all taken away could we still say, I am blessed? It amazes me how the people of Jamaica, who have so little, will say, “I am blessed”.
Psalm 103:2-5, tells us to think on and not to forget all His benefits: (A) He pardons our iniquities and heals our diseases(v. 3), (B) He redeems our lives from the pit and crowns us with loving kindness and compassion (v. 4) , and © He satisfies our years with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle (v. 5) .
So far we’ve discussed how God has blessed us. However, the Psalm says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is with in me.” Have we blessed the Lord? Yes, we say that we are thankful for the all the Lord has given us, but how do we shown it? How can we bless Him with all that is within us? In 2 Samuel 6:14 David gives us a sample of this when he unreservedly blessed the Lord by dancing before the Arc of the Covenant when he returned it to its rightful place.
When we think of how God sent His Son to die for our sins, so that we have eternal life and fellowship with our Father our hearts burst forth with worship and praise. We can say with the psalmist, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”
