God Is Faithful

It is hard for me to describe God’s faithfulness without talking about the other attributes being discussed through this study, and more. These are not independent attributes of God. There is not one that is greater than the rest. He is fully faithful, fully knowing, fully just,… What is faithfulness when it comes to God? Simply put, God will be who He is and do what He says.

“Faithfulness is that in God which guarantees that He will never be or act inconsistent with Himself…God will never cease to be what He is and who He is. Everything God says or does must be in accord with His faithfulness. He will always be true to Himself, to His works and to His creation.” A. W. Tozer, The Attributes of God.

Why can we always count on His faithfulness? God does not change, He does not go against His own character. He is and was and always will be. God is not dependent on someone else to keep His promises.

He just IS.

As I get older, I can look back at points in my life where I see His faithfulness. He was and is always present, and His words are always true. We can look back at promises He made to His people Israel, and how He faithfully fulfilled those promises. You can look at Noah and how God brought them through the flood. David was blessed by God’s prophet and many years later would became king. When you read some of the promises given through the prophets, some were not always good for that generation, but would fulfill God’s plan and bring His people back to him. He made a promise to bring us back into righteous standing with Him, fulfilled by the blood of Christ.

God is faithful to us sinners. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9.

God is faithful to those feeling temptation. “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it” 1 Corinthians 10:13. This is encouraging to know that others have gone through the same struggles before us, and will continue to after us. We can find hope and security through God’s faithfulness in stories of others.

God is faithful to those who need encouragement. “This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. The LORD’S loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassion never fails. [They] are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lam 3:21-23. We can find comfort and hope knowing that God will be who He is tomorrow from what He has shown us already.

God is faithful, He will bring about what He has promised and that should give us comfort.
