Ten Things to be Thankful For, Day 6: Learning Something New Every Day
“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24, KJV).
Have you ever thanked God for TODAY? A new day with the opportunities of serving our Lord and sharing the Good News of Jesus with everyone that you come in contact with throughout your day.
Psalm 118 is centered on God, in a movement that expresses gratitude, admiration, joy, and praise. The Lord is mentioned in every verse. The key verses building up to verse 24 are:
V. 5 I called on the LORD in distress; He brought me into a spacious place.
V. 14 The LORD is my strength and defense, He has become my salvation.
V. 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
V. 23 The LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Learning something new every day
Paul, writing to the church at Colosse, wrote in Chapter 1, Verses 9 – 14:
1. We continually ask God to fill you with knowledge of His will through all wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.
2. So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way.
3. Bearing fruit in every good work.
4. Growing in the knowledge of God.
5. Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might.
6. So that you may have great endurance and patience.
7. And giving joyful thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light.
8. For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1, Verses 9 – 10, are called the “Colossian Cycle.” These are listed in points 1 – 4 above. It starts with “being filled with the knowledge of His will” and ends with “growing in the knowledge of the Lord.”
Every day that we are given life, God has made it for us (see Psalm 118:24). Colossians 1 states that we are to gain knowledge from the Word every day, so that we can live a worthy life while bearing fruit, and doing good works for the Lord. While we do this good work, we will be growing in the knowledge of the Lord, learning something new every day.
I have told many people over the years that, as I look back on my life over the decades, I can see my growth in every decade. What I was doing in my 20s prepared me for my 30s, my 30s growth prepared me for my 40s, and it has continued like that up through my 70s. I believe that what I am doing in my 70s is preparing me for my 80s and beyond. I am learning new things every day with life experiences and technology that helps me with doing service for our Lord.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to find out what I am going to learn tomorrow for the Kingdom’s sake!
