Name #1: “Glory of the Lord”
“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken” (Isaiah 40:1 – 5).

Interpretation
Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet, through the leading of the Holy Spirit, was prophesying to the nation Israel that Jerusalem was to take comfort. The promises made by God of a future king and the hope of a redemptive plan were about to enter the city of Jerusalem. This prophecy was to happen sometime in the future. John the Baptist quotes the words of Isaiah in the New Testament during Matthew 3:3, Mark 1:3, and Luke 3:4. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus Christ, Who was the fulfillment of the future king and the hope of the redemptive plan for human beings. Seventy-seven times in Scripture, the phrase, “the glory of the Lord,” is found. The phrase is used to describe the manifestation of God’s greatness in Exodus 16:10. It was seen in a consuming fire (Exodus 24:17), a cloud (1 Kings 8:11), radiance (Ezekiel 1:26 – 28), and brightness (Ezekiel 10:4). It filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34), and was seen (Numbers 16:42), and can bring fear (Luke 2:9). The glory of the Lord was personified in the person of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:3).

Matthew 21:7 – 11 describes Jesus Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem. This fulfills the Old Testament prophecies of his victorious entrance into Jerusalem. The crowds shouted, “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” and “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” “The Glory of the Lord,” personified in the person of Jesus Christ, has entered Jerusalem, declaring Himself the “King of the Jews.”

Prophecy fulfilled
Old Testament Scripture continues to be fulfilled by the gospels describing the nation of Israel’s rejection of Jesus Christ as their king. They go on the explain His persecution and crucifixion. The promise of the redemptive plan from the Old Testament was fulfilled with Jesus Christ shedding His blood on the cross for the payment of our sins. Yes, the payment of sins for human beings was paid by “the Glory of the Lord” shedding His blood on the cross — the “Glory of the Lord” personified in the person of Jesus Christ.

Praise God for His provision of salvation through His Son!
