God Is Omnipotent

Today’s Scripture Passage: John 10: 7-18

The topic today is God’s omnipotence. This is a term that does not occur in the bible, but the bible does refer to God as being almighty. In fact, one of the Hebrew names for God – El Shaddai – can be translated to mean God Most Powerful or God Almighty. And as you read through the scriptures, you can see God proves this over and over again.

Let’s break it down to four areas to look at today: creation, daily life, death, and Satan.

Creation: Two examples are found in Genesis 1:1-3 and Matthew 14:26-27. In both cases, God defied the universal laws of science. In Genesis, God spoke, and a universe was made. He made something from nothing. Science can’t do that. They can change matter but cannot create matter. In Matthew, Jesus walks on water defying gravity. Again, science cannot do that. There are many more examples, but the point is that God does not cancel these laws. Instead, it is an exercise of a greater power.

Daily Life: Christians are mortal; we die, but God has often revealed His power by overcoming real physical dangers and thwarting the enemies of His children. Just look at David and Daniel. How often did Saul try to kill David, yet God protected him over and over (I Samuel 23:14). And Daniel (Daniel 6) who was thrown into the lion’s den. God shut the moths of the lions all night even though they were very hungry.

Death: We need to look no further than the resurrection (today’s scripture passage). I like the way David Jeremiah puts it. “God, by His exerted power, reversed the process of death, overturned the process of decay, caused a silent heart to beat again.” Jesus conquered death!

Satan: Make no mistake, Satan is strong and active, and we are living in his arena. But I love what it says in I John 4:4. “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them (Satan’s army), because the One who is in you is greater than the who is in this world.” This gives me a lot of peace when struggles are taking place in my life.

In closing, we need to keep in mind that God is omnipotent. He does not need us. Yet, he made us and loved us so much that he sacrificed his Son. So, as you go through this day today, take great comfort that the one and only all-powerful God is watching out for you!
