Paul’s Prayer for the Philippians (Philippians 1:9-11)

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11 NIV

Let’s break this text down.

Paul is praying for the Christians at the Church in Philippi:

  • That their love may abound more & more in knowledge and depth of insight (Biblical World-view perspective of life)
  • So that they may be able to discern what is best. And may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ Jesus (HIS return for His Church)
  • By doing this, they should be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes only through Jesus Christ
  • To the Glory and Praise of God

Paul is telling the Christians at Philippi to keep their eyes focused on Christ’s return (rapture of His Church). While doing so, they are to love through Biblical Insight (viewing the world Biblically). They are to serve God and allow Him to bear fruit through their efforts. They should never do this for their own edification. Their heart efforts should be for His Glory.

Paul’s letter to the Church at Colosse says the same thing but in different words. It is called the Colossian cycle. Watch how it starts with the ‘knowledge of God and ends with the knowledge of God’.

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:9-10 NIV)[/perfectpullquote]

About 40 years ago, I heard a message from a missionary who served in China. One of his comments was “the only country in the world that does not live in a tribulation world is the USA. His comment meant that the USA has it so good and things come easy for people in the USA. They do not have the needs of people in
other countries. His application was – in order for someone to be open to the Good News of Jesus Christ, they have to see a need.” His opinion was that acceptance of the gospel message is clouded by the good life that people have in the USA. They don’t have a need.

During this Covid-19 pandemic, the people of the USA have had their good life changed dramatically. Some could be open to the Good News of Jesus Christ that you possess as one of His children. Now is the time to renew, rebuild, rekindle relationships with family and friends. Share your testimony with them. Present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them. Pray daily for them. Watch what God will do to complete His Kingdom. We first have to do His assignment to us and share the  Gospel of Jesus Christ for His glory.
