“Exhortations” (Philippians 1:27-2:5)

For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in Him but also suffer for his sake, . . . Philippians 1:27

This short passage today from Philippians is setting a high standard for us. Verse 27 says that we are to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Talk about setting a high goal to reach! And how many times have we stumbled and fallen short of this. The wonder of this is that when we do fail, we have a Savior who won’t condemn us.

Instead, we have one who will stand beside us and help us to get back up. Just look at Peter who denied Christ three times. It was Jesus who got him back on “his feet” and made him a rock in the early church. So, as we go through today, let us conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

I wish I could stop here and say that all will be well with you. But it won’t. Verse 29 clearly tells us that as believers, we will also suffer for Christ. So, what should
our attitude be like when we do suffer for Christ? Hopefully, it will like Peter and the apostles in Acts 5:40-42. They were flogged and left rejoicing. They lived out James 1:2 where it tells us to consider it pure joy when we face trials of many kinds.

The title of the devotional today is Exhortations. The definition for exhortation is an address or communication emphatically urging someone to do something. This is what the passage today is asking us to do. Right now, we are living through some very weird and for many some very tough times. So, I exhort myself and others to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, not be conceited and not do anything with selfish ambition. Instead, let us consider others better than ourselves and not to look at our own interests or desires. Lastly let us be humble about it and not looking for praise or credit.

As we go through this day today, let’s do like the children’s song “I’m gonna let it shine.” Let us not hide our faith under a bushel. Don’t let Satan blow our faith out. Don’t let fear run your life. God is in control! And with the power of the Holy Spirit at the steering wheel, He will enable us to do far more than we think we are capable of in carrying out these exhortations.
