A Warning – Philippians 3:1-3
“For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh” Philippians 3:3
When I was in college I had a part time job at the boiler house on campus. One day I had a visit from a laundry delivery man who had the uniform delivery service on campus. As we talked he told me how LeTourneau was a liberal college. When I asked him why he said that it did not believe in the “gifts of the Holy Spirit”. I asked him to explain. Then he asked if I had ever spoken in tongues. I said, “No”. And he continued, “If you have not spoken in tongues you did not receive the Holy Spirit and you are not saved.” Wow, I was confused and began to lose my joy. I knew what had taken place in my life and I had never heard of this concept before. When I got back to Bible class I told my professor about my encounter and he showed me from the Word of God the fallacy of the man’s thinking. This gave me the assurance that I was saved and restored my joy.
Paul begins chapter 3 by encouraging the Philippians to “Rejoice in the Lord.” Don’t let anyone steal your Joy. Paul warns the church of an enemy that can sidetrack our spiritual walk. In verse 2 he tells us “look out for the dog, look out for the evildoers, lookout for those who mutilate the flesh.” He is tells the church not to be misled by those that impose rules and regulations that are meaningless and would draw them away from following sound Biblical teaching. In Romans 2:29 Paul says a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. Those who mutilate the flesh and do not believe in their heart are not pleasing to God. Jesus was surrounded by those who criticized Him for not following Jewish traditions. In Matthew 23 Jesus did not mix words when he put the Scribes and Pharisees in their place when He spoke the seven woes on them.
When approached by someone who presents a false or unfamiliar doctrine or belief system, check it out. Compare what they are peddling to the Bible and speak to someone that can be trusted who knows the Word and can point you in the right direction.
