The Man of God (Psalm 90)
This Psalm is a prayer by Moses to God who is considered, “The Man of God.” The term Man of God” is a technical term used over 70 times in the Old Testament. We see in 1 Timothy 6:11, this same term is used for Timothy as a man who speaks of God. We see in this Psalm that God has been our dwelling place for all eternity. He was there before anything was in existence. People are always trying to explain how the earth and mankind have come into existence, but we can see all throughout the Bible and in this Psalm that God has formed the Earth and mankind.
In Psalm 90:7-12, the writer communicates that since sin has entered mankind we have continued to forget that God is all seeing and all-knowing and sees all of us trying to hide our sins from Him. In verses 7-11 the Psalmist writes that God hates sin, and is very aware of our secret sins, nothing is hidden form Him. These sins are only known by God and are like a light in God’s presence. Mankind does not understand the God’s hatred of sin and how it puts a wedge in our relationship with Him. We think that we can live forever and can escape the wrath of God for all that we do, but that is not so. Paul writes in Romans 5:12 that sin came into the world by one man and death through sin. We all have sinned and will eventually die, but because of what Jesus did on the Cross we have been freed from our sins and have eternal life through Jesus. This is the gift of God, freedom for all who accept Jesus as Lord, and the hope of living in the expectation of enjoying God’s glory in heaven
In the final verse of Psalm 90, we see that man has recognized that his sins are the cause of all his troubles and that he needs to cry out to God. The focus of his prayer is asking for forgiveness of sins so that he may return to a life of rejoicing and living for God. We read in Psalm 85:7-13 of the unfailing love that God has for us. As nation, we need to realize that God is waiting patiently for us to return to Him. To realize that we are frail human beings and that we are not in control of what happens to us. If we fear God and realize our need for Him, then salvation is promised. We need to then be people of love, faithfulness, and righteousness.
As we learn at our church that there are “no perfect people”. Nobody can ever achieve perfection. But, if we as God’s children live our lives and use our gifts to put the message of love, hope, and forgiveness out to people then others will see that our God is the only true and living God. In Psalm 90:17, we see that God will establish the work of our hands and when we live for the glory of God our lives can have value, significance, and meaning. Paul told the Corinthians that, “if we as brothers and sisters stand firm and always give ourselves to the work of the Lord, that our labor will not be in vain” (1Cor. 15:58).
As I look at our imperfect church I am amazed at the older people who use their lives to serve God. They use their gifts to spread the message of salvation. God has given each of us specific gifts that sometimes can take a lifetime to recognize.. But as we keep searching and God reveals them to us. We need to be open to God’s leading in our lives in serving Him. The world is hurting and searching for answers. As God’s children we need to be available to show them the path to God. We are going through difficult times right now, but if we look over our lives, we can see other seasons where went through saw God right there alongside of us.
When I was around 12 or 13, I experienced a time when I had no feeling in my legs and could not walk. But through that whole experience I could see God working in my life through it. I saw how God brought people together to surround me with love and understanding and God healed me. We need to search our lives and look for those times that God was with us. We need to be daily looking to God and His word and reach out to our brothers and sisters and be available to those around us. We need to always be looking for way to show Gods love. – Timothy B.
