Some of the Most Popular Verses in the Bible Day 4: Shelter Yourself in the Lord
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28 – 30).
Definition
Shelter: “What is given for protection”
An invitation to the wearied and burdened (Matthew 11:28 – 30)
With an invitation found only in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus, Who alone reveals the Father and the divine plan of redemption, calls out, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus had called Peter and Andrew with a similar expression (4:19), but there it was literally, “Come after me,” while here it is, “Come to me,” a tender call to intimacy with Him for all those who are weary and burdened. “Weary” evokes the image of persons exhausted from their work or journey, while “burdened” indicates persons weighed down with heavy loads. They are like the crowds whom Jesus said earlier are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (9:36)

Bible verses about God providing shelter
Psalm 27:5: “For in the day of trouble, He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.”
Psalm 91:1 – 4: “Those who go to God Most High for safety will be protected by the Almighty.”
Psalm 32:7: “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
Psalm 46:1 – 4: “God is our protection and our strength. A very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 119:114: “You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.”
Notice what these Bible verses are saying!
1. He will protect me in times of trouble.
2. Those who seek Him will be protected by Him.
3. When He protects me, I am surrounded by a promise of deliverance.
4. In times of trouble, He is there to protect me and provide strength.
5. My hope is in the promises of Your Word.
Personal testimony
When I think about my life story, I can see how God has guided and protected me in many circumstances, especially His protection and sheltering of me from eternal damnation (when I accepted Christ as my personal Savior in 1971). Then, as a Christian, He has provided shelter in my daily walk and decision-making. He has given me peace to help me make the proper plans in personal decisions, family decisions, and vocational decisions. As the world appears to move in different directions, He has provided me the understanding from His Word “that He is in control” (which is His direction).
Final comments
God provides shelter and deliverance for the unbeliever the day he receives Christ as his personal Savior. He also provides shelter and deliverance to the believer who seeks His shelter during his daily walk with Christ. What a beautiful thought! He is there for us when we ask.
Are you struggling with
- a relationship?
- a decision that you have to make?
- not being pleased with the results of the recent election?
Apply a “yoke” to God. Trust Him. Your “yoke” will serve as your subjection to Him.
