PHILIPPIANS HISTORY AND INTRODUCTION

HISTORY OF THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS:
Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians while he was in prison at Rome about A.D. 62, and is addressed to the Christian congregation he had established in Macedonia. Paul and Silas first visited Philippi in Greece during Paul’s second missionary journey, which occurred between approximately A.D. 49 and 51.

THEME OF THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS:
The key theme of the book of Philippians is an encouragement to the church in Philippi. Paul wanted to encourage the church of Philippi to continue on their spiritual path and to keep on growing. The KEY verse is Phil. 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice!”

PURPOSE OF THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS:
Paul designed this epistle as a guide for ordinary living. It faces the normal problems a Christian has, and proclaims the victory which a Christian can appropriate in overcoming these problems. The recurring theme, running throughout the letter, is that of joy and rejoicing. Paul assures the Philippians that his imprisonment is actually helping to spread the Christian message, rather than hindering it. He also expresses gratitude for the devotion and heroism of Epaphroditus, who the Philippian church had sent to visit Paul while in prison and bring him gifts.

The 12 outlined sections of the Book of Philippians are:
1. How Paul felt about the Philippians. 1:1-8
2. Paul’s prayers for the Philippians. 1:9-11
3. How Paul felt about imprisonment. 1:12-18
4. How Paul felt about death. 1:19-26
5. Exhortations. 1:27-2:4
6. Facts about Jesus. 2:5-11
7. The “Therefore” Joy in Serving Jesus. 2:12-18
8. Timothy and Epaphroditus (Phil. 2.19.30)
9. A warning. 3:1-3
10. Paul’s past and future. 3:4-14
11. More exhortations. 3:15 – 4:9
12.Gratitude for gifts. 4:10 -23

Psalm 23

Many people are familiar with Psalm 23. But because we all know it, we often breeze through the psalm without slowing down long enough to rest in the assurance it offers. In this 6-part series on Psalm 23, pastor Matt Chandler introduces us to the great shepherd, the Lord, who promises to provide for every need of his flock. Though only six verses long, this psalm teaches us profound truths about our loving and protective God. By studying Psalm 23, we’ll encounter a life-transforming question: Do you trust the Lord to care for your needs?
